Global Citizenship, Voting, and more with Archbishop Desmond Tutu
From Cape Town. “Eish!” is a South African word used to express wonder or surprise. This is a great way to describe the two major events in Cape Town for the ProjectExplorer team.
At about 5:00am, my sleep was interrupted by my teammate, Ilana. She was muttering something in a foreign language -- the greeting she had been practicing for our upcoming meeting with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. She must have been really nervous about meeting him, because she wasn’t even awake. She was speaking isiXhosa in her sleep! At 11:00am we were scheduled to meet with one of the most famous and respected men in the world - Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Archbishop Tutu. Desmond Tutu is a highly respected activist and mediator. Archbishop Tutu has become known around the world for assisting in solving political conflict and using his voice to stand up for human rights and those who are less fortunate. He is the definition of what it means to be a global citizen. This meeting took me almost a full year to arrange, and it was worth every minute of the wait. Upon arriving at Archbishop’s office, we were told that he and his staff were ready for their morning tea break. We were asked to join them! I couldn’t believe it. We sat and sipped tea with a man that inspires millions of people around the world. What a surreal moment. Tea cup emptied, I set up the cameras and called for action. Ilana asked the Archbishop her first question: “What was it like to vote for the first time?” He reached over, patted her hand, and replied with the perfect answer. (Watch the first video for his reply -- I will not spoil it!) After we left the Archbishop?s office, we headed straight to an interview for O, South Africa. This is Oprah Winfrey's magazine. This time the roles were reversed and we were in the starring role. The interviewer, Megan, asked Ilana and I a long list of questions about our work in South Africa. This made me feel a bit like a celebrity. This may be the biggest and best day that the ProjectExplorer team has seen yet!
