Top Designer
Day 26
An actor's aspiration and my dream job: I have always wanted to be part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. It is where some of the best stage actors in the world got their start. I don't see myself moving to Stratford, or England for that matter, any time soon so it was really cool to spend some time behind the scenes of this world famous theatre company. We all crammed into the design room to meet Tom Piper, who is the Associate Designer for the RSC. Today, I was behind camera and had a strong desire to experiment with some interesting and creative camera angles. I think that was because we were speaking with someone who gets to be creative every day. It's his job! My favorite part of our conversation was when Tom talked about building tree houses as a little kid. Now, as Associate Designer, he gets to design the grown up versions of tree houses - sets for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His office is full of little models of the stage, with cardboard chairs and foam props, which help him imagine what the real thing would look like. Theatre is such a collaboration. This became very clear speaking with Tom. It was very impressive to hear about the team effort, and learn about the process of working with costume designers, directors, actors, and even the audience to make a play happen. Speaking with Tom reminded me that it is possible to get a job doing what you love. On our way out, we also got a sneak peak of the backstage monitors. They were showing the rehearsal of the RSC's production of Romeo and Juliet, which was opening later that night. Still wishing we had tickets!
