Day 5

OK, this morning was really cold. I don't think any of us prepared for the weather, but it sure woke us up as we waited to get inside Anne Hathaway's Cottage. We had to be there very early so that we could film before the day's vistors arrived. We started by filming our introductions outside with Charles, who was our tour guide for the morning. Between the cold and how tired we were, it was very difficult to get it right. Fortunately, Charles was a good sport and was patient.

We all warmed up once inside! Charles showed us every detail of the house including the thatched roof and how the cottage was constructed. As Jenny and I filmed the house, it was very easy to imagine a young William Shakespeare traveling to see Anne before they married.

The house was about a mile away from Shakespeare's home, in a village called Shottery. While the details of how they met aren't clear, it is thought that their fathers may have known each other from the town. We do know that Anne's family had several things that other families at the time didn't, including their own bread oven and a stone floor. Most floors were just made of dirt.

Sarah sat on the "Courting Bench" which is where Shakespeare may have recited some early sonnets to Anne. Perhaps it was the poetry of Shakespeare that won Anne.
