Bedouin

Traditionally, the Bedouin people are Muslim Arabs that live in the deserts of northern Africa and the Middle East.

They are a nomadic people. This means that they do not live in the same place for very long. They move from one place to another in search of natural resources for themselves and their animals. Desert-dwelling Bedouin live in tents made of goat hair or leaves, or even under trees and bushes covered by cloth. However, today, many live in cities.

No matter where they live, their space is divided into 2 sections. The mag’ad is reserved for the men and guests. The other section is called the maharama. It is where the women to cook and visit with their female guests.

Both Bedouin men and women wear long flowing robes and pieces of cloth to cover their heads. The men’s head-covering is called a keffiyah. The women’s head-covering is called a hijab.
