South African Cuisine

From Sophiatown Restaurant in Johannesburg. Today, Ilana ate worms!

Our friends at Sophiatown restaurant prepared a big dish of tomato sauce covered worms for Ilana. The name of the dish is called ‘Masonja.’ It is from the Limpopo province, which is in the north of South Africa. Here, these worms are an important source of protein in people’s diets.

One of my favorite things about travelling trying local cuisine. I am lucky to be travelling with a team that is willing to sample almost any food.

Of all the traditional foods we have tried in South Africa, my favorites are pap and chakalaka. Chakalaka is a spicy salsa made from tomatoes and mixed vegetables. Pap is served with almost every meal. To eat pap you mold a small amount of it in your hand, then you use it to scoop up the food on your plate. I scooped up a delicious helping of chakalaka and enjoyed a tasty bite!

Eat up!
