Ramadan is a period of fasting and reflection. It is considered the most holy month of the year for Muslims.

Ramadan officially starts on the first day of the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. Daily fasting takes place between sunrise and sunset. During this time, Muslims must not eat or drink, smoke, or even gossip.

It is common during Ramadan to have a meal before dawn called a Suhoor. The meal after sunset is called Iftar.

Ramadan is observed by over 1 billion Muslims throughout the world.
