Cricket with the Western Cape Cobras

From Newlands Stadium, also known as the ‘Snake Pit’. Cricket is not only the name of an insect, but also a sport played around the world. Most Americans, including me, know little or nothing about this game.

Cricket is played in the U.S. Before the Civil War, it was a very popular sport. In fact, the first international match took place between Canada and the U.S.!

After the Civil War, baseball became more popular and cricket began to die out in the U.S. However, in the rest of the world cricket is still very popular. Cricket and baseball have some things in common, but are mostly very different.

We had an exciting cricket lesson at Newlands Stadium. Two professional cricket players from the Western Cape Cobras, Dominic and Henry, showed Christopher how to bat and bowl. Christopher made a hit on his very first try!

We also got a short history of the game. It is a game of many rules and funny sounding terms like wickets, overs, and googly. We joined a few of the locals watching the World Cup Cricket finals and tried to follow the game. Once you get the hang of the game it is very exciting to watch.

Goodbye, Cape Town: Hello, Zululand!
