Cultural Crossroads: Jordan
Traditional Clothing

From Amman. Today, Ilana got to play dress-up in traditional Jordanian and Palestinian clothing. The enormous collection of Arab fabric, dresses, jewelry, and costumes belongs to a woman named Widad Kawar.

The first dress was from a region of Jordan called Salt. It’s the longest dress in the Arab world. The dress was so valuable and rare that Ilana was not able to try it on. From the picture on the left, you can get a sense of just how long it is. Ilana looks super tiny standing next to it!

My favorite piece in Widad’s collection was the orange and green dress from the city of Ma’an in southern Jordan. The fabric was so bright and beautiful.

Widad’s dress collection is so large that she has plans to start a museum to preserve and showcase all of the dresses. In fact, this is how many museums get started.

P.S. The tie around Ilana’s head in this picture is a traditional Jordanian headscarf.
