Refugees & UNRWA
From Jabal Hussein Refugee Camp. Over the years, Jordan has received a large number of refugees from neighboring countries. There are approximately 2 million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, making it the largest refugee community in the country.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is a relief organization that provides services to almost 5 million refugees worldwide. They have a network of 10 refugee camps in Jordan alone and the services they provide range from healthcare to education. We visited an all girls’ school in Jabal Hussein Camp. Upon our arrival, the girls welcomed us with a song and led us to a courtyard where a small band and chorus performed. What a welcome, indeed! Shortly after our welcome mini-concert, we met representatives from the school’s Parliament. The young ladies chosen to lead in the recent school elections assembled to share their individual campaign platforms with us. As each student representative shared her political vision, I was amazed at the depth and wisdom that they each personified. Each girl was outspoken and bold about her plans for the school as well as her community’s and country’s future. These young leaders seemed keen on making the world a better place for everyone, and I left feeling like anything is possible!
